This brick bearing-wall building, the only one of its kind in Uppertown, was originally part of the North Pacific Brewing Co. complex erected in 1896 by noted Portland architect Emil Schacht. The brewery was founded by John Kopp who initially established the business in the late 1880s at 34th and Grand in Adair's Addition. Prohibition brought an end to the brewery industry in 1915, and the buildings were converted into a condensed milk plant. This venture was largely unsuccessful, and by 1924 the buildings stood vacant. In 1928 the beer storage house was remodelled into a modern fire station for Uppertown. Local architect John Wicks was contracted to redesign the building for its new use, and the adjacent wood-frame portions of the brewery complex were demolished. The fire station served the Upper Astoria community until 1977 when a new facility was erected behind it. The building stands as an important link with Uppertown's industrial and civic past. |
