Its primary association is with Alberta Shelton McMurphey, who lived here from its construction in 1888 until 1949. Mrs. McMurphey was the first woman bicyclist in Eugene, a member of the first graduating class of the University of Oregon Music Department, and the mother of six. She was active in a number of civic organizations and, after women gained the right to vote in 1912, served on the Eugene school board.
The House is also associated with Dr. Eva Johnson, its last private owner, who was brought up in Eugene, earned her M.D. in 1918, and, after retiring to Eugene in the 1950s, bought the House and lived in it until her death. Dr. Johnson was also active with a number of community groups and was an early advocate for historic preservation in the city. |
